Manchester United 1-1 Newcastle Review

United started off with a bit of a selection problem and it only really got worse throughout the match which Giggs, Campbell and Carrick being substituted because of injury.

I was surprised when I didn't see Tevez' name in the starting line-up but there was a reason and that was because he had to fly home due to a family bereavement.

Chelsea had played before United and they won 4-0 which meant that United really had to pick up all three points. United started the match at a strong pace, we had a dangerous freekick just a minute into the match when the Newcastle new boy Coloccini upended Cambell (who was making his full Premier League debut) on the edge of the box, Giggs took the free kick, the ball hit the wall or more specifically, it hit Taylor's hands and in my eyes and many other peoples, it should have been a penalty.

United had some other fantastic chances but were unable to go in front because of a lucky save by Given, Rooney crossed in the ball and Campbell's header hit Given straight in the head and knocked him over.
Campbell, Rooney and Scholes had a great chance to score but a double save by Given kept it at 0-0.
20 minutes into the match and Taylor's shot was deflected over the bar to give Newcastle a corner, what resulted from that corner wasn't what I was expecting.
Martin's headed in the ball and Newcastle when 1-0 up, which really was against the run of play.

Two minutes later and it wasn't all bad news, United had equalised. Fletcher had stabbed in Giggs cross to make it 1-1.

Half way through the first half and United were forced to make a substitution, Carrick had an injury and he was replaced by O'Shea.
We now know that Carrick will be out for two weeks which means that he has had to pull out of the England squad.

10 minutes before half time, Scholes had a 20 yard shot which was going well wide, so Rooney through himself at it but it was not going to go in.

Half time and it was 1-1, Newcastle were defending well and United were proving that we definetly need.

Second half and Van Der Sar wasn't really tested, he had to save an early shot from Martin's but it was comfortable.
It was a quiet start to the second half, Gigg's was drifting between flanks but United needed to step up a gear.
Campbell was having a few shots but Given could match them.
Vidic made a fantastic tackle in United's penalty aream Scholes shot from 25 yards out but it wasn't going in.
Vidic's header from a corner hit the bar and bounced away, Vidic was left down injured but he got back up and got on with it.
Campbell and Giggs were subbed because of injury so that was some more bad news.

The match finished 1-1 and overall I think we did well considering the injurys we had and the players that were unavailable to us, hopefully we can now go on a run of wins.
When we get our players back then I think we will be a much better team, we missed Ronaldo which I really hoped we wouldn't, but we were without Nani, Anderson, Hargreaves, Park, Tevez and others so it isn't all bad news because it was the first day of the season.

"United started off with a bit of a selection problem....". This is the starting line of your posting. Which United do you refer to. Typical of the superior and biased attitude shown in the press when discussing MANCHESTER United :(
